St. Hugh of Lincoln. From the Catholic Encyclopedia. Born about the year at the castle of Avalon, near Pontcharra, in Burgundy; died at London, 16 Nov., His father, William, Lord of Avalon, was sprung from one of the noblest of Burgundian houses; of his mother, Anna, very little is known. St. Hugh lived in Burgundy as a monk in the Carthusian order, committed to the isolated life of a hermit living in silence and contemplation. Then in he was asked by King Henry II of England to lead the Carthusian monastery in Witham (interestingly a project Henry undertook as part of his penance for the murder of St. Thomas Becket).
